Across multiple panels, both Dave Friedman and Dan Gower flag a recurring frustration: "Jose mod" has become a loose genre label for any modded Marshall, regardless of whether the work actually traces back to Jose Arredondo's bench practice.
From Panel QA April 2025, ~[14:20], Friedman: > *"It's [Jose] becoming a term we use to describe a Marshall-oriented amp. It's a genre… You can Jose anything. You can add a little Jose element to an amp and then is it a Jose? I don't know."*
Dan Gower in Panel #11 ([111:00]): *"Everything's a fucking modded Marshall. Everything's a fucking Jose at the moment."*
The cost of the over-application:
1. Builders ordering "a Jose mod" without specifying which recipe variant get amps that may not match what they imagined. 2. Forum threads describing one amp's tone as "Jose-y" gradually erode the documented-canonical attribution work that Friedman and others have spent decades preserving. 3. Period-typical hot-rodding (Cameron, Friedman's own Brown Eye, Soldano, Cesar Diaz) gets retroactively labeled "Jose" because the family resemblance is real but the lineage is independent.
What "actual Jose work" means, per Friedman's authority:
- The front-end signature (high-impedance V1 plate-load + tight coupling cap + 68k/68k voltage divider) is the defining feature (see jose-defining-front-end).
- The pre-tone-stack master volume is the second-most-defining feature (jose-mv-history).
- Reduced negative feedback off the 4Ω tap is the third (nfb-physics).
- Diodes are an OPTIONAL variant — present on ~1 in 6 documented Jose amps (diode-prevalence).
- Everything else is donor-chassis-dependent. Jose preserved whatever Marshall was on the bench in front of him (see jose-player-driven-variance and two-jose-variants).
JMIL's response to the over-application is the four-tier attribution taxonomy: - Tier 1 = jose_canonical: documented on multiple verified Jose builds. - Tier 2 = debated: multiple interpretations in the public record. - Tier 3 = not_jose_origin: commonly grouped with Jose but originated elsewhere. - Tier 4 = customer_specific: applies to one build only.
Players reading mod descriptions in the lab can see at a glance whether a given choice was actually Jose's hand or whether it's a later interpretation. The taxonomy is editorial discipline against the genre-creep Friedman flags.
